Cross country: Indians’ Lowery opens season with impressive win

Stafford’s Hannah Lowery easily won the Varsity A girls race at Saturday’s Great Meadow Invitational cross country meet at The Plains.

Lowery, a senior, covered the 3.1-mile course in 19:11, 26 seconds ahead of runner-up Nicole Carter of Battlefield.

Mountain View sophomore Jordan Angers was 11th in the race (20:57), and North Stafford’s Erin Quinn (21:18) was 18th. The Wolverines were eighth as a team, best among area schools.

Stafford’s boys finished third in the Varsity A field, thanks largely to a second-place showing by senior Ian MacLeod (16:30) and a fourth from Joey Abbateillo (16:42). Loudoun County’s Patrick Joseph won the race in 16:21.

Zachary Batt (17th, 17:24) was North Stafford’s top finisher.

Stafford freshman Bridget Abbatiello was third (21:34) in the JV girls freshman/sophomore race.

BLUE DEVIL XC KICKOFF

Culpeper’s Elliott Sellers (17:58) and King George’s Haley Armentrout (20:52) won the individual titles at Saturday’s Blue Devil XC Kickoff in Culpeper.

Running on his home course, Sellers beat runner-up Any Page of Fauquier by seven seconds. King George’s Jacob Watson was fourth (18:35), helping the Foxes finish second behind Fauquier in the boys team standings.

Armentrout and teammate Miranda Green (21:53) finished 1–2 in the girls race, helping the Foxes easily win the team title. Massaponax was second, thanks in part to a fourth-place finish from Taylor Boruch (22:11).
